Fashion week braids – the hidden braid tutorial you have to try

Hair Romance - Fashion Week Braids - hidden braid tutorial

Braids are still a key beauty trend I spotted at fashion week. This hidden braid was a favourite that I couldn’t wait to try in my hair. Here’s the tutorial so you can try it too!

There were two variations of this style I spied at fashion week. At the Jennifer Kate show, the style was loose with a tucked bun and at Steven Khalil the look was more refined and sleek ending in a braided bun.

For my hair, I decided to try the looser style. This type of hidden braid can be hard to do in your own hair. The braid itself isn’t difficult, but keeping the sections even and neat is tricky. That’s one of the reasons I love messy hair, it hides so many flaws!

Don’t be put off trying this style. Once you get the sections right, the braid is just a basic Dutch braid.

What you need:

  • 2 hair elastics (clear bands are best)
  • Bobby pin
  • Tail comb for sectioning
  • Clips to hold your hair

Step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Begin by sectioning your hair. Use your tail comb to mark out a rectangular section at the back of your head. Clip the rest of your hair out of the way.
  2. Create a Dutch braid. This is the reverse of a French braid, sometimes called an inside out braid. Split the hair into three sections, cross the left under the middle, then the right under the left. On the next section add in hair and continue braiding down to the nape of your neck.
  3. Secure the end of your braid at the nape of your neck. Use a clear elastic or one that matches your hair colour.
  4. Combine all your hair into a low ponytail. Unclip the side sections and gather your hair at the nape of your neck. Check the placement at the back. You want your hair to cover the edges of the section but not your braid.
  5. Loop your ponytail halfway through to create a loose, messy bun.
  6. Hide your hair elastic. Take a small section of hair from your bun and wrap it around your hair elastic to cover it. Pin it in place with a bobby pin underneath the bun.

Styling tips

  • For long hair: loop your hair through twice or twist it into a loose bun.
  • For fine hair: add some styling powder or gently backcomb your hair to add extra volume.
