Hair Romance - Easy everyday hair - half-up Dutch Braid Tutorial

If you’re looking for a pretty everyday hairstyle, this half-up Dutch braid tutorial is your easy hair solution.

I’ve been playing around with half-up half-down hairstyles a lot lately. I sort of forgot about them for a while but I don’t know why. They’re a great compromise style. You can keep your hair off your face but still leave your hair down.

Half-up styles are perfect for second day hair too. I find the top layer of my hair can be a bit messy but I still want to leave my hair out. The braid adds a pretty detail to the back of your hair.

If you have a fringe or bangs, you can leave them out or include them in the braid. I’ve left a few layers out around my face but it’s not necessary. Choose the version that suits your hair.

This tutorial will only takes you a couple of minutes to do so it’s ideal for busy mornings.

What you need:

  • Small, clear hair elastic

Step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Brush your hair to remove any knots before you braid.
  2. Take a section of hair at your crown and split it into three equal sections.
  3. Begin your Dutch braid. Cross the left section under the middle, then the right under the left.
  4. Add in hair to your braid. When you cross the next section under, pick up hair and combine it with that section.
  5. Repeat step 4 for three more sections. Add in sections of hair from your hairline so as to leave more hair out underneath (As in picture 5 above).
  6. Secure your braid with a small clear elastic so that it blends into your hair.

Styling tips

  • Make sure you pick up hair from the side of your hairline when adding to the braid. This leaves more hair hanging below.
  • Don’t make the braid too tight. I love the sections sweeping across to the braid so leave it a little loose for a more romantic style.
  • Stretch out your braid. My go-to braiding tip. If you have thin or fine hair, make sure you stretch out your braid. Pull at the sides of your braid to make your hair look thicker.

My hair cheat

Can you tell I’m wearing extensions in this tutorial? They’re only a little bit longer than my hair but they add more fullness to my hair.

I’m just starting to try a few brands of extensions so I can work out which ones are the best quality. I’d love to know if you have clip-in extensions and which ones you think are the best.

Let me know if you try this tutorial in your hair! And if you have clip-in extensions, which brands do you like?
