Here’s another time-saving everyday curly hairstyle you can wear anywhere. The curly triple bun tutorial will save you from a bad hair day and prevent headaches at the end of the day too.

I confess I wear a top knot a lot. It’s such an easy go-to hairstyle. But I urge you to pull yourself out of a top knot rut and add some fun hairstyles to your hairdrobe.

This triple bun hairstyle is so easy to do and won’t take much longer than a single bun.

The bonus of the three buns is that it’s so much more comfortable to wear. You can keep your hair up all day and because there’s 3 points holding up your hair, the pressure on your scalp is split. The weight of your hair is equally pinned up so you won’t get that tell-tale bun headache at the end of the day.

The triple bun hairstyle also works in wet hair. I rarely put up my curly hair when it’s wet but if you have to, then this is the style to try. The triple bun is awesome in wet hair. Not only does it split your hair up into smaller sections so it can dry better, but the twisted buns leave beautiful waves in your hair as it dries. It also smooths the tops sections so it’s a triple winner in wet hair.

What you need:

  • Bobby pins
  • 3 x hair elastics (optional – for long or thick hair)

Step-by-step tutorial:

You want to create three buns that are around the same size so the key is to make sure you split your hair into equal sections.

  1. To create the first bun, take a section from ear to ear over the top of your head.
  2. Twist the top section tightly and then wrap it around to form a bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.
  3. Split the rest of your hair in half to be the other two buns.
  4. Twist the left section up and around to form a bun next to the first bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.
  5. Repeat with the last section to make your third bun.
  6. Make sure all three buns are touching and pin them together for added support.

Hairstyling tips:

  • If your hair is long or thick: I recommend using a hair elastic to secure each of the three sections before creating the bun. If your hair is hard to hold in an upstyle, give it some extra support with a hair band. Think of it as scaffolding for your updo.
  • Three buns too many? If your hair is fine, you may think three buns are too many. Try two buns (one on top of each other) instead.
  • Three buns not enough? If you’re blessed with tonnes of hair, try doing four or five buns instead.
  • If your hair is amazingly long: Here’s a great variation for long hair. Secure each section with an elastic and braid each section. The braids help to shorten your hair sections and will make it easier to twist into buns. How beautiful would this look with all that braided detail too?

The only thing you’re limited by is your imagination!
