Ever wondered how my straight hairstyles work in curly hair? Yesterday I posted one of my easy go-to styles – the easy braided bun hairstyle tutorial – and today here’s the curly version.

All my hairstyles can be done in curly or straight hair. If you see a style you like in straight hair, don’t be scared to try it in curly hair. It can be done, and often looks more interesting.

For me, it’s easier to shoot my hairstyle tutorials in straight hair. I can keep styling and re-styling straight hair. I can brush it out and start a new style or redo a look. I can experiment and try lots of styles on the same day. If I tried that in curls my hair would be a mess! The more I touch my curls, the frizzier my hair becomes so I can really only shoot one or two tutorials in curly hair.

If you’re a curly girl like me, take inspiration from the straight hair styles and give them a go in your hair.

Remember you can always send me styles you’d like tutorials for or any hair questions you’d like answered.

What you need:

  • Small hair elastic
  • Bobby pins

Step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Make this braid big. Take a large section of hair from the top of your head and split it into three.
  2. Create a Dutch braid down the back of your head. A Dutch braid is the reverse of a French braid, also known as an inside-out braid. Cross the left section under the middle, then the right under the left.
  3. Add the rest of your hair to the braid in three sections. This isn’t a small braid with lots of sections, it’s a big chunky braid. On the next section crossing under, add in a third of the rest of your hair. Repeat on the next two sections so all of your hair is combined in the braid. Continue in a regular braid and secure the end of your hair with an elastic.
  4. Curve the end of your braid around to form the bun. Tuck the ends of your hair in and pin around the edges of the braid to hold it in place.

Styling tips

  • Don’t brush curly hair. Unless you want a huge ball of frizz, keep brushes away from dry hair. If you have a knot, use some leave in conditioner to soften your hair and detangle it with your fingertips.
  • Work with your curls when you’re braiding. What I mean by this is to take sections with whole curls, instead of breaking up your curls. Don’t try to be too exact in curly hair. Go with your curls, not against them.
  • Adjust styles to suit your curly bangs / fringes. I like to keep a few curls loose around my face and I style this depending on how my curls are sitting that day.
